— Mo, Dance Central

Mo is a character who has appeared in every Dance Central game. He is a member of Hi-Def alongside Glitch.

Personality[]

Mo is a level-headed, easygoing person. He is confident in his abilities as a dancer and occasionally enjoys showing off. He has witty quips for when he or the player performs well and rhymes his words often. His interest in wordplay also extends to writing, specifically poetry. He does not take himself very seriously, often playing pranks and joking around with people. Despite usually being humble, he sometimes tries to be an unauthentic version of himself in order to impress people, particularly friends and people he has a romantic interest in. However, when he receives negative feedback as a result of these behaviors, he recognizes his wrongdoings and corrects himself.

History[]

Dance Central[]

Mo first appears in Dance Central as a playable character with three looks: B-Boy, Flash, and Mo'Original. B-Boy is available from the start, Flash is unlockable by earning 25 Stars with him, and Mo'Original is unlockable via a cheat code. He is the default dancer for the Warm Up Challenge.

In the beginning cutscene, Mo is first seen spray painting the Dance Central logo onto a billboard. He then jumps onto a train, scattering cards with the Dance Central logo on them. One of the cards is caught by MacCoy, who is riding the train he lands on. He continues to scatter cards around the town on his skateboard, passing by Taye in the process. In the ending cutscene, he skateboards towards a payphone and mentions the club he has been promoting, looking behind himself while on the phone. Once he hangs up, the platform he is standing on takes him underground to the club, where most of the other characters are partying.

Dance Central 2[]

Mo returns in Dance Central 2 as part of Hi-Def and has three looks: Crew Look, Street Style, and DC Classic. Crew Look is available from the start, Street Style is unlocked by earning 36 Stars within Hi-Def's songs in the Crew Challenge mode on any difficulty, and DC Classic is unlocked by importing songs from the first Dance Central game. As of October 5, 2016, imports have been disabled,[1] so it can no longer be obtained.

Mo assures Glitch that the player is not a spy for The Glitterati

In the Crew Challenge, the player first encounters Mo at Lowdown listening to Glitch talk about his dance moves. When Glitch spots the player and accuses them of being a spy for The Glitterati, Mo calms him down and assures him that they likely want to dance with them instead. Once the player impresses him with their skill, he tells them that Hi-Def is staying underground so The Glitterati cannot copy them, then gives the player their crew card.

Dance Central 3[]

Mo returns in Dance Central 3 as a member of Hi-Def. Alongside his outfits from Dance Central 2, he has two new ones: Retro Fitted and DCI Agent. Retro Fitted is his default outfit and Street Style is available from the start while the rest are unlocked by leveling up.

In the Story mode, Mo was sent to the 1980s alongside Glitch by Dance Central Intelligence to learn moves from the era that could be used against Operation Lockstep, Dr. Tan's plan to take over the dancing world. When the player encounters Mo at Toprock Ave., he thinks that they are there to have a dance battle with him and Glitch, so they start to dance. When Rasa informs them via Boomy that the player is instead there to take them back to the present, they stop dancing and Glitch expresses his disappointment, telling him that the local recreational center will be bulldozed if they leave. Mo debunks his claim, knowing that he is only trying to avoid getting motion sickness from time traveling again, and reminds him that they have bigger priorities. Once they return to the present, Glitch feels sick, but Mo reassures him that he will be fine and tells him to practice his headspins.

Later, Dr. Tan uses DCI's time machine to send Mo and everyone else who had been brought back to their headquarters to the prehistoric area in hopes that "the dinosaurs will take care of them". After the player traps him in the time stream, Mo and the rest of the agents are recovered and sent back to the present. In the credits, he is seen talking with Taye.

Dance Central Spotlight[]

Mo returns in Dance Central Spotlight as a playable character. He is one of fourteen characters available to play as within the game. His unlockable counterpart is Epsilon.

Dance Central (VR)[]

Mo returns in Dance Central as a playable character. He has two outfits: his default outfit and an alternate outfit that can be unlocked by raising his respect level to the maximum level. He can be found at the Bar and his favorite song is HUMBLE..

In the Dance Central comics that take place before the game, Mo is seen in line at the club alongside Glitch. When Glitch expresses concerns that his fake ID will not let him into the club, Mo reassures him, telling him that they will be missing out if he is denied entry. When they reach the entrance, he shows his ID to Hart, who allows him entry but bounces Glitch. He then says goodbye to Glitch and leaves him outside while he enters the club.

The player first meets Mo at the Bar, where he is sitting at a bar stool. When he notices the player, he recognizes them as Emilia's friend and asks if they have heard about the club closing, stating that he heard it was going to be turned into a shovel factory. After greeting an unseen patron who calls out to him, he gives the player his contact information and offers to set them up with dates. As he develops a closer friendship with the player, he makes numerous attempts to romance other people at the club by pretending to be an unauthentic version of himself. Over time, he begins to realize that the player does not approve of this behavior and apologizes, confessing that he was trying to impress them. He and the player then make a promise to be honest with one another.

On the club's final day open, Mo attends an event hosted by Emilia alongside Miss Aubrey, Oblio, and Hart. When Hart defends Oblio from Dr. Tan, Mo takes her side, believing that people should stay true to who they are. If the player has a higher respect level with Mo than the other characters, the player will dance with him to HUMBLE. After the dance, Mo reassures Oblio that he can rely on his friends even after the club closes, then encourages the player to answer their phone when it starts to ring. After hearing the news that the club will stay open, he expresses relief that Dr. Tan is not selling the club.

Concept and creation[]

Character designer Matt "Perly" Perlot elaborated on the creation of Mo in a blog post published by Harmonix[2] as well as on his own blog.[3]

Mo was the first character to be created for Dance Central. His design was inspired by the breakdancing culture of the West Coast of the United States with colorful clothing to accentuate his "colorful" personality. Perly explained that Mo's hoodie came from his longtime desire to design a video game character with a hoodie, citing concepts for characters wearing hoodies he made for other Harmonix games. He described the obscuring of Mo's face as "[giving] him a quirkiness that made him feel real" despite it initially being controversial amongst the Dance Central team at first.[2] Mo wore slippers in his initial concept, which was also a controversial decision. Perly stated that one of Mo's character traits that he had in mind was that he loved to wear slippers, saying "that's just how he rolls".[3] Although the slippers were scrapped from his final concept, they still remain present in the game via a cheat code.

In the announcement video for Dance Central (VR), Mo is briefly shown with a purple hoodie and green eyes,[4] possibly indicating that there were plans to change his color palette in the initial phases of the game's development.
